The Porta Maggiore and the statues of Theophrastus and Dioscorides
It is the original entrance to the Botanical Garden, aligned with the adjacent public garden of Villa Giulia. It is characterized by two twin pilasters, topped by statues of two famous ancient botanists, Theophrastus and Dioscorides, created in 1789 by the sculptor Domenico Danè.
This entrance remained in place until 1795, when it was relocated to its current position, after the completion of the Gymnasium.
