Collections

The collection reflects the research areas developed, such as the main adversities of agricultural crops, the communities of arthropods and phytophagous insects of Sicilian forest environments, the study of the bee and wild Apoidea, as well as insects that feed on wood and paper material of historical and artistic interest.

Inaugurated on December 15, 2014, the "Quadreria Mediterranea" is a collection of contemporary art composed of paintings acquired or donated in the 20th century. Among the authors stand out Filippo De Pisis, Ottone Rosai, Giovanni Omiccioli, Sebastiano Milluzzo, Nino Garajo, Gianbecchina and Vaquero.

The Mineralogy Collection houses one of the richest and oldest collections of minerals in Sicily, such as the splendid finds of the Sicilian gypsum-sulphur series, the various collections of minerals, often rare and from all continents, the rocks and decorative stone materials, the precious Sicilian amber, the precious and ancient nineteenth-century study and research tools.

The collection “Sicily as told by cartographers,” housed in the former Steri Prison, was created by Antonio Lagumina, who, through extensive and passionate research, has built up a significant cartography collection comprising maps of Sicily from the 16th to the 19th century.

In the Sala Gerbasi (also named Sala delle Capriate) at the Steri, the new thematic itinerary of the University Museum's picture gallery has been set up, as part of the Enhancement Agreement which, with the "Grande Abatellis" project, aims to make the heritage of the collections present in the deposits of the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Abatellis accessible.

The Emanuele Paternò Collection of Historical Chemistry Instruments is housed in the Emilio Segrè Department of Physics and Chemistry and contains laboratory equipment and apparatus used by chemists at the University of Palermo since the second half of the 19th century.

The historical-documentary materials that constitutes the Scientific Collections of the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo come from different departments, which were united in 2011 in a single structure.

The Department of Physics and Chemistry of the University of Palermo has a rich collection of scientific instruments, whose oldest ones date back to the early of 19th century.

The Collection includes about one hundred instruments from the 1950s used to measure psychophysical variables, memory processes, attention, reaction times and to record physiological processes.

Numerous anatomical specimens of great historical value, collected over the last five centuries of activity and study, which testify to the methods and instruments used in teaching one of the key subjects for the preparation of generations of medical doctors.

The Pathological Anatomy collection includes specimens in liquid, a case of animal pathology with a taxidermized two-headed lamb and an osteological specimen of an acromegalic and is currently the most representative collection of foetal-perinatal malformation pathology in the Italian anatomopathological museum context.
