Quadreria della Regia Università

Scuola Romana, Sacra Famiglia, XVII sec (Odazzi)

Introduction

In the Sala Gerbasi (also named Sala delle Capriate) at the Steri, the new thematic itinerary of the University Museum's picture gallery has been set up, as part of the Enhancement Agreement which, with the "Grande Abatellis" project, aims to make the heritage of the collections present in the deposits of the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Abatellis accessible. The project began in 2018, the year of Palermo "Capital of Culture".
The itinerary is made up of around fifty works whose production spans three centuries, from the 16th to the 18th. It is possible to admire valuable works belonging to the Novelli school, such as the Portrait of a Man or the Portrait of a Young Patrician, from the Roman school, the Holy Family or the Madonna with Child, or from the Venetian school, such as the Portrait of the Armenian Patriarch or the Portrait of a Bearded Man. There are also paintings known as the Procession of the Relics of San Gennaro by Giaquinto, The Madonna Supports the Deposed Christ by De Ribera, or Abraham Adoring the Angels by Preti.

History

The paintings were exhibited in the first venue of the the Museum of the Royal University of Palermo, located in the Teatini monastic complex in via Maqueda. The masterpieces came largely from donations made by illustrious nobles such as Giuseppe Emanuele Ventimiglia Prince of Belmonte, Carlo Cottone Prince of Castelnuovo, the Marquis of Bressac, Francis I of Bourbon and the Marquis Jacob Joseph Haus.
