The Herbarium: an archive of biodiversity
Founded in the early 18th century, the Herbarium of the Palermo Botanical Garden has been enriched over the centuries by the contributions of numerous scholars who have explored, collected, studied, and dried plants from the Italian flora, the Mediterranean area, and various parts of the world.
The Herbarium now houses approximately 400,000 exsiccata (dried plant specimens), which serve as an essential tool for research and study in systematic botany, ecology, biodiversity, and evolution.
The Herbarium is equipped with a preparation, drying, and identification laboratory, as well as a "Virtual Herbarium”, a database containing detailed records and images of the exsiccata, which can be accessed online for consultation.
