This catalogue is the first complete publication entirely dedicated to the description of the main exhibits of the Museum of Engines and Mechanisms of the University of Palermo. The collection is one of the largest and most heterogeneous in the field of internal combustion engines among those which are publicly accessible in Europe. As a whole it describes the evolution of engines, from the early energy systems with steam engines of the 19th century, up to turbojet engines and the most modern hybrid systems that in recent years have been spreading in many sectors. Each of the main fields of application of engines is well represented in a specific exhibition area, in which the variety of exhibits represents all the main technical solutions used over time. Given the complexity of the evolutionary path of motoring, closely connected with various scientific, historical and economic aspects, the structure of the catalogue follows that of the exhibition layout within the Museum, which is based on the aforementioned fields of practical application.
