Introduction
The collection was created with the aim of preserving and valorizing technological devices that have fallen into disuse due to the rapid progress of innovation. It includes over one hundred specimens that document decades of computer history, from its origins to the present day. The devices present cover a wide spectrum of technologies: from punched card systems to Personal Computers, including terminals, memory media and portable devices. The collection hosts rare pieces and significant specimens of the main evolutionary stages, produced by iconic companies such as Apple, IBM, Commodore and Olivetti. In addition to its technological value, it also represents an educational and cultural tool, offering a journey through the historical memory of computer science, useful for understanding how quickly tools and paradigms have evolved, even in the scientific and academic fields.
History
The University of Palermo was one of the first universities in Italy to equip itself with an IT system for data management. First through the University Computing Center established in 1973, then merged into the University Information System, which still manages data processing activities. The amount of technology accumulated over the decades is therefore enormous, and the foundations of the museum collection are built on this.
