MUNIPA

An exhibition space dedicated to the story of the University, illustrating its activities and the protagonists of the past and present, strengthening the identity of the University of Palermo.

History

Munipa is an exhibition space housed in one of the buildings inside the monumental complex of Steri, located on a stretch of Via della Rosa, preceded by the first of the ogival arches of the portico annexed to the fourteenth-century garden at the corner with Via dei Magazzini, between the body of the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate (protector of the Chiaramonte family) and the path that leads to the ancient viridarium (recently restored) behind the complex. This space is located in one of the buildings that housed the nineteenth-century warehouses of the former Customs House, some of which were intended to house the Historical Archive and now cleared due to the change of use from a place of conservation to a museum space.

The mission of MUNIPA are to tell the story of the University, illustrate its activities and tell the protagonists of the past and present, strengthening the identity of the University. MUNIPA presents itself in its spatiality, divided into two levels, the first - near the entrance to the Steri - offers a broad overview of the most significant episodes of the University of Palermo, through its women and men, in a period of time that goes from its foundation to the present day. This development is also told in relation to the morphology of the city, to the urban and decentralized University locations, present in various centers of Sicily and to international exchanges through the list of countries with which the University currently has institutional agreements.

On the upper level there is a display of a selection of finds, objects and artefacts (paintings, sculptures, fossils, minerals, scientific instruments, anatomical and botanical teaching models, zoological finds, but also volumes and archive documents) all part of the Collections of the University Museum System and the Departments, chosen to tell stories that develop around figures of eminent professors of the University - Piazzi, Gemmellaro, Doderlein, Segrè, to name a few - their research, their studies, their teachings. This is a limited selection and for this reason a changing and periodically renewed display is planned in order to be able to express, through thematic displays, the different disciplinary areas and the different protagonists of the University.
