Birds are undoubtedly among the animals that have most fascinated mankind; they fly, have varied and colourful plumage and have always cheered us with their songs since time immemorial. Finally, some species have adapted well to living in large Italian cities. Palermo is the fifth largest city in our country and lies in the centre of a wide gulf enclosed by two promontories. Whether to replenish their supplies during migration or to breed, Palermo, with its coastline and gardens, offers all the necessary resources to a large number of bird species that thus provide its inhabitants with an incredible spectacle of flying dances and evening choruses.

This book invites the reader to get closer to these extraordinary winged feathered creatures, to recognise them through their characteristics, but not only. only. The uniqueness of this book lies in the possibility of recognising them: even through their songs by scanning a QR code that leads not only to their sound but also to their visualisation, a very effective tool for memorising them. Palermo is home to a large number of species (estimated over 200), here limited to the 70 most frequent, each illustrated in individual cards. The book ends with three appendices that challenge curious readers to conduct their own census, an activity that will give them the joy of discovering a great environmental wealth present in Palermo's historic parks and gardens.
