La Scala Scarpa all'ingresso monumentale di Palazzo Chiaromonte

Scala Scarpa

The staircase of the entrance hall of Palazzo Chiaromonte on Piazza Marina created by the famous architect Carlo Scarpa

History

The main façade of Palazzo Chiaromonte on Piazza Marina features a monumental entrance that leads into the space designed by Carlo Scarpa for access to the fourteenth-century building, from which there is a dual view of the ficus of Piazza Marina and, on the other side, of the wonderful internal courtyard of the Palace. The restoration of Palazzo Chiaromonte in the 1970s gave the architects Roberto Calandra and Carlo Scarpa an empty space that represents the point of connection between different places and different levels. First of all, it is the connection between Piazza Marina and the internal courtyard, but it is also between the ground floor and the main floor; it also represents the connection with the offices of the adjacent Palazzo Abatelli through the Terrana room. This entrance is in fact connected to this room by means of the tunnel, now a permanent exhibition room that tells the story of the restoration phases. Therefore, a series of horizontal and vertical connections on different levels with different environments, to be solved in a space of 6 meters wide and 11 meters long. Carlo Scarpa solved it in a brilliant way, creating one of the most iconic places.

In 2024, a parapet was built on this staircase based on an original design by architects Fabio Lombardo, a young collaborator of Carlo Scarpa during the 1970s, and Tobia Scarpa, son of Carlo Scarpa. This intervention represents the only example of a modification of a work by Carlo Scarpa.
The parapet, with metal and wood elements, materials dear to Carlo Scarpa, was made in Venice at the Zanon workshops, historic blacksmiths who worked with Carlo Scarpa, and was personally assembled by Francesco Zanon.
